I fixed the disc errors on my iPod – wah hey! It’s only taken 6 months to find an answer, but hey, it’s fixed!
Why the fuss?
All I wanted to do was defrag my iPod (to improve read performance), but disc errors prevented me from doing so. The errors were a result of unplugging the iPod without proper disconnection in Windows XP – littering an alleged “60GB” worth of garbage folders with gibberish/unreadable/undeletable filenames on the disc.
The solution
The iPod supports a “disk mode”, whereby the device is loaded as a pure a harddrive (i.e. iTunes wont try to do anything special with it). By enabling “disc mode”, Windows can safely perform error checking/correction and defrag operations. The link below has some pretty diagrams on how to enable “disk mode”:

In the end, my disc was only 4% fragmented and I didn’t need a defrag!
Phatt apple sauce recipe, for 3 ppl. use:
2 apples peeled/chopped, 1t butter, 2t honey, 1t brandy, 1/2t cinnamon. Cook for 8 minutes in the microwave, blend to your liking. Amazing! I’m so ho ho hoi sum!
